Preventing Heart Disease
  Meet Doctor Hobson

Facts:

  • There are over 60,000 miles of blood vessels in our bodies if we place themend to end. If we place them side by side, we could cover half of a football field. This makesthis organ system the largest in the body!

  • Our heart beatsover 100,000timesper day, it can never rest! Our heart and blood vessels are under the constant strain of blood pressures.

  • Ourvascular system is the most common organ system of the body for degenerativechanges to occur, particularly the arterial portion of that system.

Thethree primaryfactors associated with arterial disease are:

  1. Weakening of the vessel wall with resultant aneurysm’s or ruptures.

  2. Narrowing of the lumen, causing ischemia - (deficiency of blood due tofunctional constriction or actual obstruction of a blood vessel.)

  3. Damage to the endothelium, with thrombosis as a result (thrombosis - a condition causing formation ofa solid mass of blood constituents.)

Allof the medical pathology text, and current research information, confirm thatatherosclerosis is by far our worlds greatest killer. Morbidity figuresfluctuate up or down yearly, however, approximately 1.3 million Americans dieyearly with this disease, accounting for about 1/3 of the deaths in the U.S.This disease in not a disease of the elderly! It begins early in the firstdecade of life, before age 10, and silently progresses until itprematurely ends our life aroundage 75.

More Facts:

  • Over 90% of coronary artery disease is attributed to atherosclerosis

  • Over 50% of the deaths from diabetes, Is attributed toatherosclerosis.

  • Over 50% of the deaths from cerebrobyascuiar disease is also attributed toatherosclerosis.

  • The World Health Organization reports that 12 million people die every year
    from cardiovascular disease.

  • 300,000 Americans will die suddenly withheart attack before they can obtain
    medical help this year.

  • 29 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure which damages there
    circulatory system.

  • 8 million Americans suffer from irregular heartbeats.

  • 2.5 million Americans suffer fromcerebrovascuia. disease.

  • Over 100 billion dollars are spent in the U.S. on the treatment of
    cardiovascular disease every year.

  • Survivors of heart attacks and strokes frequently become disable and live in
    nursing homes.

  • The costs for nursing homes in the U.S. amounts-to over 60 billion dollars
    every year.

The remarkable fact about CHD - Coronary Heart Disease, is that it is mostly
preventable. The sad and frustrating fact about CHD is that many people are not
willing to change their eating and exercising habits to prevent it.

Americans are conditioned to think they can or should wait until they are very
ill before taking action. They believe that they can restore their lost good health
once more by taking a pill or drug of some Kind. Many Americans indicate by
their actions, that the HealthCare community has responsibility for their health,
not them. They want the doctors to make them healthy. All these beliefs are false.

Everyone is responsible for their own good or bad health, because a vast
majority of disease processes are preventable through healthy life styles.

Many Americans are addicted to their disease producing foods and eat them daily
in large quantities. When told that they must change, become agitated, defensive,
and protective of their life styles, they want an easier answer, like a magic pill.
Until we wisely apply the inescapable knowledge that we must live a healthy life
style, we will always be a sick society who are looking for answers which will
never come in the form of a magic pill.
