Forest Gnome Fund is an organization that assists in bird rescues. We do not house these rescues, but instead help where needed in the rescue itself. We may assist in the transportation of a rescue to a permanent home. We may assist in medical costs after the rescue has taken place. Perhaps help is needed in equipment to aid in the rescued bird after she has arrived at her new home. Maybe the rescue requires special foods or medications and we would assist in this area also. The FGF will help in many areas however we require that our Certified Avian Vet, Dr. Brian Speer DVM Diplomate, ABVP, ECAMS be consulted in all initial medical aspects of the rescue. The initial consultation fee will be paid for by FGF. This is to assure that a proper diagnosis and treatment has been recommended. We realize that all vets are not versed in avian medicine and want the rescued bird to have the best medical information available. For more information please consult our FAQ page. Why did I start the Forest Gnome Fund?First Time Ever: One of the most memorable moments I had while hand feeding baby parrots is the moment that their new eyes start to focus on objects for the first time. The look of wonder in those eyes as they focus on the overhead light fixture. The joy in those eyes when they gaze at their hand feeders face for the first time, seeing it in sharp, full focus. I loved to witness this "seeing" for the first time ever. I used to wonder what would become of these babies that I so lovingly fed, taught and raised through weaning. Would they end up in permanent homes where they would not want for fresh cool clean water to drink? Where food was fed in abundance and variety? Where they were given the best medical treatment known today if they needed it? I could not answer these questions as they were not my babies to be sold to people of my choice. Weaned babies were given back to the breeder to sell to whomever they chose. Several years ago I signed up to be on an avian rescue discussion list. Naturally the topic of the day was rescue and the details regarding the bird that they were working on rescuing at the moment. These birds did not have the option to drink fresh water. Some would only be able to drink the filthy green liquid that was to remain in their dishes for weeks at a time. These birds did not have the option to eat a balanced diet, as they were only offered sunflower seeds at best. These birds did not have the option to receive good medical care if they became sick. This was the time that my son, Paul and I decided that we wanted to help in any way we could to provide help to these birds that were being rescued. We wondered if one of these unfortunate birds had been one that we had raised in our home for so many months, hand feeding them and nurturing them into adult hood. At this point I retired from hand feeding and we set out on our quest to form the Forest Gnome Fund. With the help of Forest Gnome Fund and volunteers helping in various areas of avian rescue, we hope that with those wonderful brand new eyes that see for the very first time ever, there will be also hope. Thank you for visiting our site. We hope that you have enjoyed your stay and will revisit again soon as we will be updating and adding features as time passes. Te Diews, (gnome for thank you & good bye) Janell
