Remembered Grace

by Marc Dotson

The quill scratches in wide arcs across the striped parchment,
Arching and swirling in a magnitude of words.
Parapet stones lie cold, motionless, beneath living feet.
The stars peak out of the bubbling
Fires of war.

Casting glances at the burning embers of
People now dead, of warriors of nothing but clouds.
I can’t help but to believe that they die for nothing.
And yet, with their hated remembrance, and
Honored valor – I treasure the thoughts of
Those who are drifting to that starry expanse.

And forever they fly, free from the smothering clouds of war,
Where only the hawk remembers death.
And yet, through all the tumult – in the
Light of the burning sphere, my own
Blade flashes and strikes the foe, sending
Them to that reverent place.

And with each stroke, I wish further
To be going to that place – to sit on high.
But war embers still dwindle, and I must protect.

For what? For the honor of an unjust lord?
I shan’t make that mistake again.
And so the stone passes from my feet.
I reach out to embrace the dying fires.
