"Where the Stars stay"
THE MELODRAMA
The Old Barn Playhouse is the place to go in Kanab for fun entertainment. Located on the properties of Parry Lodge, this unique theater features live western melodrama. Cheer the hero, sigh for the heroin, and boo the villain at the show. It's a pop-corn-throwing, rollicking, thoroughly enjoyable evening of fun for the entire family.
The Barn was built around the turn of the century and was used for many years as a place to store hay and keep animals. Parry Lodge was established in 1929 especially for the movie folks when they were filming in Kanab. The Barn was used by them to house the animals used in their productions. This gives the Barn its novel history. Glen Ford had a tooth pulled there (Complete story when you visit). Victor Mature kept camels there for the movie: "Timbuktu" and John Wayne stabled his horse in the Barn.
Converted to a theater in 1970, the Barn has become the delight of visitors to Kanab. On summer evenings, it vibrates with the sound of a honky-tonky piano, boo's and cheers, and most of all laughter. Come enjoy the history, the nostalgia, and the entertainment with us. It's the most fun you'll have all summer.
Due to the popularity of our dinner shows, the melodrama will be open to the general public only on select nights this year. Contact Parry Lodge for details and reservations at 435-644-2601 or Fax: 435-644-2605.
DINNER SHOW
The Old barn Playhouse features a hearty western dinner especially for tours and groups of twenty or more. The meal is cooked western style in dutch ovens and includes succulent prime rib, baked chicken, savory dutch oven potatoes and all the fixins imaginable. (For a complete menu contact Parry Lodge.)
The tinkling sounds of a honky-tonk piano greet our guests as they enter the dinner area and as they eat. When dinner is finished, a cowboy M.C. explains some of the history of the area, of the barn and of the movies filmed here. Then, professional country and western entertainers present a live show for our guests. Dancing is encouraged.
The really unique element of the entertainment is provided by our guest themselves, however, when members of the audience are asked to preform their own mini-melodrama. They are provided with the script in their native language, don a costume, receive expert stage direction, and star in a complete (though shortened) melodrama. Our audience participation shows have received rave reviews from folks all over the world.
Come join us. Its the best eats and the most fun you'll have all summer!
