Over the years Zion has meant different things to different people. Legend has it the Paiute Indians were superstitious about "I-u-goone" (Zion Canyon) and refused to stay there after dark. To the Mormon pioneers it was a haven of beauty resembling natural temples, and they called it "Little Zion". An early Methodist minister was so awe-struck with the beauty of the canyon, he gave many of the towers and cliffs biblical names such as the Three Patriarchs, Angels Landing, and the Great White Throne. As you gaze up at the massive sculpted cliffs that rise 3,000 feet into the sky, you will find yourself sparked with a sense of wonder at the magnificent beauty of Utah's oldest national park.
Zion National Park is accessible on Scenic Byway 9 from 1-15 on the west, or by way of US 89 on the east at Mt. Carmel junction, north of Kanab.
The park is open all year and each season is distinctively beautiful. Spring brings waterfalls cascading into the Virgin River - the force that carved Zion Canyon. Summer, the busiest season, is striking with the deep red cliffs rising above the lush green canyon. In autumn, brilliant red and gold foliage accents the colors in the stone cliffs. And winter is quiet with snow adding contrast to the entire landscape.
You can drive, bicycle, or take a tram through Zion. Horse-back rides are also available. But to really experience Zion's magnificence, hike along the park's trails. Guided walks are offered if you want an interpretive tour. There are easy trails (some of them accessible by wheelchair), and more challenging day hikes. The 16-mile hike through The Narrows - if you don't mind wading through the Virgin River - requires a permit and advance preparation.
On your trip to Zion, stop at the visitor center. It is located at the south entrance and is open daily all year from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with extended hours in the summer. Watch the new giant screen film Treasure of the Gods at the Zion Canyon Cinemax Theatre in Springdale. It is shown several times a day, year round. During the summer months, you can enjoy the Grand Circle Multi-Media Presentation at the 0. C. Tanner Amphitheater in Springdale.
