The skyline of Utah County is dominated in all directions by the 11,000 ft. peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. The Spanish were the first to explore Utah County while searching for a trade route from Mexico to Northern California. The area was settled in the late 1800s by Mormon pioneers who saw the rich soil and abundant water as ideal for farming and grazing. Rich agriculture and livestock traditions still thrive in the rural communities surrounding Provo and Orem. Sophisticated irrigation systems allow fertile green pastures to flourish in the otherwise dry terrain. The orchards of Utah County produce more than 76 percent of the fruit grown in the state including some of the world's finest peaches and pie cherries.
