NEAR BLUFF: Bluff with its distinctive pioneer architecture is situated between the bluffs of the San Juan River and was the first town in San Juan Country. A plaque on Sunbonnet Rock at the base of the Navajo Twins at the north end of town tells the story of the pioneer effort. Bluff claims to be the home of the "Navajo taco", a unique dish of fry bread, chili, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Visit pioneer cemetery for a glimpse of the past and a good view of the valley. Population: 260. Elevations: 4,380.

Swinging Bridge and St. Christopher's Mission - The mission is architecturally designed in Navajo motif. The swinging bridge over the San Juan River is close by. the bridge has been used by the children from the reservation to attend school in Bluff. It also leads to some Anasazi ruins. Located 2 mi. E of Bluff. Allow 2 hours.

Montezuma Creek/Aneth - The area presents a panorama of contrasting civilizations with modern oil wells, ancient Anasazi culture an modern day Navajo people. Aneth is about 26 miles from Four Corners Monument. Hatch Trading Post, Nancy Patterson Archaeology digs and Hovenweep are in this area. 5.5 miles south of Monticello turn left off of US 191 onto a gravel road or 10 miles south of Blanding turn off of US 191 onto U-262 and follow the signs.

The San Juan River - the San Juan is the fastest flowing major river in the United States and the one used most by colleges and universities for educational geological trips. Good river canyon scenery. Sand waves are unique to this river. The BLM Campground at Sand Island is noted for a large petroglyph panel on the cliffs along the river. Featured are five kokopelli, the hump backed flute player of Pueblo Indian mythology. Located 3 miles SW of Bluff.
