NEAR BLANDING:
Four distinct cultures: Ute, Navajo, European pioneer, and Spanish have left their history in Blanding. Edge of the Cedars State Park is the site of an Anasazi Indian Ruin and a modern museum. Blanding is the beginning point for the Trail of the Ancients, a 100 mile loop trip through the heart of San Juan County. Several pottery plants offer tours. Arch Canyon and Hole in the Rock Jeep Jamborees originate from Blanding each year. Elevation: 6,200. Population: 3,100.

Hovenweep National Monument - This 505 acre monument contains 6 groups of ruins. The most accessible ruins, with tower walls 20 feet high, are just steps from the visitor center and are outstanding examples of the skills of the ancient masons. Visitor center and campground are open all year. From Hovenweep it is less than 50 miles through picturesque McElmo Canyon to Cortez on the way to Mesa Verde. Located 45 miles southeast of Blanding. 2 miles of gravel road. Suitable for passenger cars. Allow 3 hours for a quick trip.

Natural Bridges National Monument - Campground and visitor center are open all year. The bridges are examples of how water has eroded the white sandstone landscape and are visible from the paved road around the 8-mile loop or spend a full day hiking in the canyon at the base of the bridges. Located 47 miles southwest of Blanding on U-95.

Grand Gulch Primitive Area - Anasazi habitation in the Grand Gulch area covers a period of approximately 1,000 years. Within the 36-mile long gulch are many interesting pictographs and petroglyph panels. Travel into Grand Gulch is limited to hiking and horseback. Access from Kane Springs requires about a 5-hour hike one way. Located south of Natural Bridges National Monument off US-261. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area/Lake Powell/Rainbow Bridge National Monument - Over 1,800 miles of shore line. Two marinas swerve the San Juan Country side of Lake Powell, both offer a complete lake experience with boat rentals, housekeeping units and marina stores. Halls Crossing is 90 miles southwest of Blanding on Hwy 95 and 276. Ferry leaves for Bullfrog ont eh even daylight hours. Scenic and charter flights available at the Cal Black Memoral Airport. Hite Marina is located 87 miles souhwest of Blanding on Hwy 95. Rainbow Bridge, the world's largest natureal bridge is easily reached by boat frojm Halls's Crossing or by trail from Navajo Mountain Trading Post(with permission from the Navajo Tribe). Allow 8 hourst by boat from Hall's Crossing and 14 miles via Navajo Moutain Trading Post hiking or horseback.
