Cisco 678 External DSL Modem

Important Notice

The latest Cisco external modems sometimes ship to you with specific instructions, from Qwest, related to an "update" disk that accompanies the modem. It is important that you follow whatever directions Qwest sends in your modem's packaging.

Device Installation
The Cisco external modems require a NIC (network card) in your computer. If your computer does not have a NIC, you can contact any number of computer stores to have one installed for a reasonable price. An Ethernet cable connects the external modem and your computer.
Device Configuration

The configuration of the Cisco external modems can be fairly complicated. We recommend you bring your modem to one of our local offices and we can configure it for you.

TCP/IP Setup

The Cisco DSL modem, when connected to a DSL line, is assigned its IP address from our servers. Your computer should be be set to obtain an IP address automatically. The Cisco DSL modem will give your computer an IP address and all other necessary information including DNS server information.

Connecting Multiple Computers

Cisco External DSL modems can share their Internet connection and integrate into an existing network. This requires the use of a Hub. The Ethernet cable from your Cisco DSL modem will plug into the "uplink" port on the hub. Each of your computers can plug into the other ports on the hub. Your DSL modem will receive an IP address when it has completed its connection to our system across the DSL line. In turn, the DSL modem can assign (DHCP) a private IP address to each of the computer connected to the hub. This use of NAT, Network Address Translation, will provide security.
