Does InfoWest intentionally disconnect my computer from the Internet?
No and Yes.
First, we do admit that some of our customers will experience disconnects. We do not want our customers to be kicked offline, and we are doing everything that we can to reduce this problem.
Secondly, we do have what is called an "idle disconnect". What this means is that if your connection sits idle for a certain length of time (we currently have it set to 600 seconds, or 10 minutes), our computer will think you have forgotten about your Internet connection, and will go ahead and hang up the phone line. You may want to note that reading an email or web page is considered idle, as no data is actually being actively sent across your phone line.
The idle feature is not intended to kick you offline, but to prevent our phone lines from being tied up by customers who forget to disconnect their Internet connection. If you are losing your connection during an active download, or before 10 minutes, it is because of other reasons, and is not related to the idle disconnect.
Last, we do have an 8 hour time limit for all connections. If you are connected for longer than 8 hours, our system will release your connection. You can always reconnect for another 8 hours. Because our dial-up accounts are not intended to be dedicated connections, we do this to prevent customers from using up our phone lines indefinitely.
Note: The idle and 8 hour disconnects do not apply to our high speed Internet customers. Also, for high speed customers, random disconnects are extremely low (estimated less than 1%), as it is an "always-on" or dedicated service. Our DSL connections start at $41.90/month, and our Wireless high speed connections start at $39.95/month.
