InfoWest MMDS (Licensed) Wireless
InfoWest Licensed Wireless, also known as MMDS or Broadband Radio Service (BRS ) wireless Internet uses FCC-licensed frequencies to assure trouble-free reliable connections. Economically priced, and widely available, licensed wireless is a great choice for the average home use.
Advantages:
- Licensed frequency - avoid interference from other ISP's, handheld phones, etc.
- Fast, low-latency downloads
- Optimized for Voice over IP
- Can be used with a single computer or, with an additional router, for an entire home network
- Plug and play
- Uses existing in-home TV cable in most cases.
- High quality, Cisco head-end equipment and Motorola modems for trouble-free, fast connections.
- Each tower is protected up by battery as well as generator backup power
- Long range - We have successfully connected customers up to 30 miles from the towers
Compared to unlicensed wireless:
- Lower upstream (send) speeds than InfoWest unlicensed wireless. May not be appropriate for business who use VPN's or home users who frequently send large files such as videos or images.
- Maximum download speed 3 megabit vs 6 megabit available on Trango wireless.
- Some areas are not yet covered by this service
- Usually requires a larger, TV-style antenna on the home.
What is required?
To install licensed wireless at your home, we will need to have clear line-of-sight to one of the licensed wireless towers. Licensed wireless works in the 2.5 GHz (BRS ) frequency range, and will not penetrate trees, buildings, rocks, etc. You can check to see if your home is in our coverage area by searching our coverage maps online, or just give us a call and we'll pre-qualify you over the phone.
Licensed wireless works great with nearly any PC or router. As part of our installation package, we will provide you with a wireless cable modem, and will install an antenna on your home. From the antenna, we will run TV cable to one computer or router in your home. We'll use existing TV cable in the home if possible. We highly recommend you install a battery backup (UPS) system and / or surge protector for the cable modem as well as your computer or router. If you want to use the service with more than one computer we recommend you purchase a router. We offer wireless routers optimized for this service, call to learn more.
InfoWest Trango (Unlicensed) Wireless
InfoWest unlicensed wireless operates in the Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) 5.8Ghz band. We operate over fifteen towers in the area to provide broad coverage and high speeds to as many customers as possible. Our third generation Trango Broadband equipment is designed to avoid interference problems in this public band, and features Smart Polling to ensure fast, reliable internet speeds as well as stable connections for VOIP, VPN and gaming.
Advantages:
- Unlicensed frequencies offer high, symmetrical send and receive speeds up to 6 megabit.
- Fast, low-latency downloads and uploads
- Optimized for Voice over IP and VPNs.
- Can be used with a single computer or, with an additional router, for an entire home network
- Direct ethernet connection from our antenna - doesn't require additional equipment in the home.
- Multiple towers for diverse connection and coverage options
- Each tower is protected up by long-life battery power
- Small cells - fewer customers per tower helps increase available bandwidth.
- Small antenna - usually the size of a football, maximum size looks like a satellite dish
- Over 90% of our towers are either fed directly by our fiber optic network or are one hop away.
Compared to unlicensed wireless:
- Other users of the 5.8 Ghz frequency can cause some interference. We have designed our network and use equipment made to avoid these issues. We also continuously monitor for problems and can quickly adjust frequencies and antenna polarity remotely to avoid conflicts.
- Requires new category 5 wiring in the home to one computer or router (installed by InfoWest as part of our installation package)
